    • Stamford Youth Soccer League (203 322 5455)
    • The Stamford Youth Soccer League (SYSL) is roughly devided into two parts: travel teams and house league or recreational league. House league is for every skill grade, and just supposed to be fun. Coaching is by parent volunteers, although the SYSL has recently added some coaching sessions as well. Games are typically on Saturdays or Sundays, where you will play other teams within the house league. Practice depends on the coach. The younger age groups typically just practice 1h before the game, the older groups (6 and up) have practice once or twice a week. There is also an indoors house league for January and February, without any practice. The house league feeds into the travel team.
    • The travel teams (starting at U9) play teams from the neighboring cities (generally less than 30min drive). Your kid needs to suceed in the tryouts to get onto the team. There are the formal tryouts, usually twice a year. Your house league soccer coach is supposed to tell you when they happen. The tryouts are given by professional coaches from Quickstrike FC, whom the SYSL has hired to coach U9-U11. If you miss the tryouts for some reason, you can contact the Quickstrike guys (Jason Segovia) to see if you can participate in an informal tryout. One way is to show up during travel team practice (West Beach field) and have your child participate in a practice session with the other travel kids. Don't be discouraged if your kid doesn't make it the first time. If there is enough demand, the SYSL will open a "B" team later on.  Every team has its own manager (one of the parents), and typically a parent coach to assist the head coach. If you have questions, try locating the manager or coach, and if that fails,  contact Fred Wexler of the SYSL, who is in charge of the travel program as a whole.
    • Everton America Youth Soccer League has boys and girls teams. They lease a field from All Saints School in Norwalk, which is close to Merritt Parkway (Rte 15). They have professional coaches and well-run training programs for all ages.
    • Beachside is a direct competitor to Everton, and also runs a strong program out of New Canaan.
    • SSN Brazilian Soccer Club offers indoors training classes. They were fairly expensive, but have a good coach-to-student ratio.  The gym they used last time we checked was less than adequate.
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Wrestling
